I’ve been getting really positive compliments about my skin recently, which of course makes me very happy! Both my parents have great skin and so hopefully as long as I look after mine I’ll look as good as they do when I get to their age. I must admit I’ve been rather lucky with my skincare products for review recently. With the exception of one eye cream which made my eyes swell up, leaving my skin itchy and sore beyond belief. The area was so hyper-sensitised that a month after the initial breakout I went back to the eye cream I was using for three months prior to the one that caused the breakout the symptoms were resurrected. I wrote to the company and they’ve not even had the decency to reply, I don’t normally write bad reviews but on this occasion, I just might. But besides from that drama the skincare products I’ve been trying out have been superb quality, which has been reflected in my skin!
I religiously cleanse and moisturise every day, I’ve been spritzing my skin with toner recently as I find with this refreshing when the air is so heavy and close. I exfoliate two or three times a week, dependent on how my skin is feeling. I’ll also try and pamper myself with an at-home facial once a week. Don’t get me wrong, I love going for facials at the spa or salon but I’ve been so busy of late that it’s difficult to find time to make the trip to the salon for a facial or other treatment. I’m trying to make more time for myself at the moment and am forcing myself to book appointments (what a hardship!) for facials, massages and the like.
So without any further ado, let me share with you my winning combination for a natural at-home facial. I’ve found this combination to be really effective and leaves my skin glowing, renewed and radiant. If you’ve found your natural facial combo I’d love to hear yours so why not leave a comment below, on Facebook or tweet me @biteablebeauty
Spa at Home – Natural Facial
Natural Facial Step 1 – Cleansing
Pomegranate Cleanse Naturally
This natural and organic pomegranate cream cleanser is part of the Regenuvite range from the amazing Pomegranate range. I’ve tried three products from this range now and loved them all – the Active Night Regenuvite Plus (which won Best Anti-Ageing Treatment in the Biteable Beauty Best Of Awards 2012-13), Body Rehab Oil and Cleanse Naturally. I love the smell of all the products. It’s an unusual, well-balanced blend and not too sweet. Frangipani Absolut is the signature scent but you also get notes of pomegranate and tangerine coming through amongst others. The Pomegranate Cleanse Naturally cream also contains a whole host of other skin-loving ingredients, so it’s a great treat for skin whilst also offering deep cleansing –
- aloe vera to cool, soften and heal
- almond oil, packed full of skin-loving vitamins and minerals
- apricot oil to improve elasticity
- baobab seed oil, the tree of life offers impressive moisturising, improves elasticity and encourages healthy cell renewal
- beeswax to protect
- camelina oil with omega fatty acids to plump and regenerate
- cocoa seed butter to nourish
- shea butter to protect and heal
- starflower oil to help skin retain moisture
- sunflower seed oil and pure vitamin E to help neutralise free radicals
All this just in the cleanser! It’s a creamy cleanser that’s best applied to dry skin. I do so in small circular and upwards motions before running my facecloth under the hot tap, opening it up and placing it to cover my face before gently patting my face and repeating twice more, once again with hot water and then a third time with cold water before switching my facecloth for a towel and gently patting dry. This leaves the skin ready for the next stage of the natural facial – exfoliation!
Natural Facial Step 2 – Exfoliation
The smell of this product really reminds me of something from my childhood, I just have to remember what that something is! It’s a delicious blend of organic apricot, mandarin and bergamot oils. Apricot brightens, mandarin balances oil and bergamot is not just an uplifting scent, it can help with acne, psoriasis and dark spots in the skin. The exfoliating parts are apricot seed powder and the exfoliating action is gentle but still effective. Just like the cleanser, there are some real treats for the skin in the ingredients list, so whilst exfoliating you are also caring for your skin-
- olive, sunflower seed and jojoba oils to condition, protect and nourish
- soothing aloe vera leaf juice powder to calm and soothe
- marshmallow root to nourish as well as protect
Green People Fruit Scrub Exfoliator is best applied to dry skin in small circular and upward motions. I always focus on the areas where I tend to get build up – nose and chin – for a little longer than the other areas of my face. Then I rinse clean with warm water before patting dry, ready for the next phase of the natural facial – treatment mask.
Natural Facial Step 3 – Treatment Mask
Melvita Firming Mask
I was using the Fruit Enzyme Mask from Green People initially, however since that finished I replaced it for Melvita’s Firming Mask for Dry Skin. My skin is not particularly dry now that it’s (marginally) warmer, but in the winter my cheeks do get a bit dry, so I thought I would give this mask a go. Also, my skin doesn’t really need firming and hopefully won’t for some years, but as they say prevention is better than cure! This is the first product I have tried from Melvita and I am very impressed with the mask. It feels rich, creamy and luxurious when applied and sinks into the skin as time passes. It’s made with four phyto-nutrient rich plant oils – rose maschata, sunflower seed, sisymbrium irio seed oil and borage seed oil. Sisymbrium irio, otherwise known as London rocket, a name which comes from its abundance post the Great Fire of London, is a new ingredient for me so I thought I would share with you my findings about this ingredient. It’s rich in lipids i.e. fatty acids so is great for plumping and nourishing the skin! The formula also contains pink coraline, and ingredient that helps improve skin cell cohesion and oxygen supply to the cells. It’s a red seaweed rich in calcium. The product is naturally scented with rosewood and geranium, a lovely, uplifting fragrance.
I apply an even, thick layer of this mask to my skin and leave on for a minimum of ten minutes. Funnily enough, the instructions in French say to leave on for fifteen minutes whilst in English, it says ten minutes! I also read online that for really dry skin you can leave the product to soak in and then remove any excess with a cotton pad. I have been using a facecloth with hot water to remove. After use, my skin feels pampered – nourished and repaired, softer and smoother. My fine lines are also visibly reduced, and my skin is ready for step four of the natural facial – ultra care.
Natural Facial Step 4 – Ultra Care
Neal’s Yard Rejuvenating Frankincense Facial Oil is my ultra care product of choice at the moment. I love both the fragrance of frankincense as well as the excellent skin-healing properties it possesses. It’s great for encouraging cell regeneration and can heal spot marks, scars and stretch marks, eradicate fine lines and wrinkles and address skin discolouration and pigmentation. It’s also astringent and anti-inflammatory.
You can use this product alone as a moisturiser but here I’m using it along with a moisturiser for extra hydration. Neal’s Yard Rejuvenating Frankincense Oil also contains macadamia seed oil, baobab seed oil, apricot kernel oil, evening primrose oil and hemp oil amongst others! An ultra-nourishing skin treat, it’s been shown in clinical studies to moisturise skin for up to twelve hours! Just a few drops are all that’s required to cover both face and neck. I like to give myself a little facial massage whilst I’m doing this, incorporating some pressure points as well as tapping (blog post on this coming soon!) Now on to Step 5, moisturisation!
Natural Facial Step 5 – Eye and Face Moisturisation
On to the final step of the natural facial – moisturisation! After I’ve let the oil sink in (which I use on my fine lines around the outer eye area) I apply Antipodes Kiwi Seed Oil Eye Cream. This eye cream is amazing! In clinical in vitro studies, it has been shown to stimulate the synthesis of collagen production by up to 82%. It feels luxurious yet light and is easily absorbed by the skin. It’s ultra-rich in vitamin C, thanks to the key ingredient of kiwi seed oil, which we all know is a superb antioxidant for protecting the skin from free radical damage. It also contains nourishing carrot seed oil, soothing and cooling aloe gel, smoothing jojoba oil and the natural anti-ager all Antipodes products are based around, avocado oil.
I always say that if you are going to invest in one product, make it a good quality moisturiser! Spa Fabulous A Little Pot Of Heaven is just that. It’s full of pure, organic ingredients such as frankincense, which compliments the oil from step 4, anti-ageing CoQ10, nourishing sweet almond oil, conditioning grape seed oil, plumping rosehip seed oil, rejuvenating Persian rose oil and clarifying licquorice extract.
The quality of both these products is such that only a small amount of each is needed per application so whilst these products may not be the cheapest they do last a long time!
I hope you’ve enjoyed my spa at home natural facial. As you will probably have noticed the same ingredients kept popping up in the different products, which is why this natural facial regime is so effective – the products are complimentary to each other!
