Neal’s Yard Remedies Ginger & Juniper Warming Oil was a clear winner for me last year.
There are of course body oils that you can also use as massage oils, however, I was looking for a product which had therapeutic properties that were advantageous during massage. The heating action of Neal’s Yard Remedies Ginger & Juniper Warming Oil ticked this box! Perfect for a post-workout massage, given by someone else (if you’re lucky!) or even just for self-massage purposes. Great for deep tissue work if you have a strain or injury, but also effective for relieving tired, aching joints and muscles.
Neal’s Yard Remedies Ginger & Juniper Warming Oil is created with 75% organic ingredients. With two of the best base oils for massage – Sunflower Seed Oil – light, non-greasy, with a good slip, and Sweet Almond Oil – a slightly oily feel but absorbed quickly by the skin – along with natural preservative Wheat Germ Oil, which is a rich source of Vitamin E (hence its preservative powers). It’s the combination of essential oils however where this product really comes into its own. Firstly, there’s Ginger, a stimulating oil that boosts circulation and therefore brings blood supply to the affected area. Juniper is also stimulating and has anti-rheumatic properties. There’s also lavender to relax muscles and calm the senses, Rosemary to ease cramps (whilst also boosting circulation and anti-rheumatism), and Sage which is great for water retention, heavy limbs and congested circulation.
I found this oil great to use either after a bath for deep tissue massage once the muscles were relaxed, and I did pop a little under the hot tap whilst running the bath. It helped a treat with my tight shoulder tendency. Post-workout I would rub my legs down with the oil pre-shower. It’s so effective at bringing the blood supply to the treated areas, thus aiding recovery (and meaning less aches and stiffness the next day!)
Highly recommended for athletes and sporty types, those with poor circulation, but also for those who like their massage oils a bit on the spicy side!
