With summer holidays looming for hopefully most of us the thought of slipping into a bikini, swimsuit or trunks fills many with dread. We all have our body hangups and there’s always something we would change about our bodies but as I’ve got older I’ve learnt that health is the only thing that matters. Try to learn to embrace your lumps, bumps, curves and wobbles and if you can’t, at least try to accept them.
I’ve been on a lifestyle kick of late and whilst I keep losing weight, it’s coming off my arms and legs when I’d really like to see a difference on my thighs, hips and bum. I have accepted that to see a real change in these areas I need to go on an exercise spree. Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t want to be a size 8 skinny mini, I’ve never come anywhere remotely close to that, I’d just like to tone up what I have already. And as Loretta at Anamaya said to me at my Ayurvedic massage and consultation recently, I need to find a weight and existence at which my body is happiest. So I’m on this journey to rediscover my balance.
There are a whole host of weight loss and detox supplements out there that promise dieters and fitness fanatics the world, but be warned there are plenty of snake oils out there! I am going to share with you a couple of tried and tested supplements that can help you to shape up both internally and externally, whatever the season!
Shape Up Supplement 1 – Raspberry Ketone Complex
Whilst you’d probably have had to be hiding under a rock not to have heard of this supplement, how many people actually know what it does or how it works? I’m sure anyone who’s ever tried the Atkin’s diet will recognise the word ketone from the name. Or at least relate it to the ultimate state you are trying to get your body in to – ketosis. Ketosis is where there are elevated levels of ketones in the body which in turn leads to increased fat metabolism; it encourages the body to burn fat as its primary energy supply. To achieve this in the Atkin’s diet you essentially cut out all sugars, limit your carb intake and eat almost as much fat as you like. You then gradually reintroduce good carbs (like veg) and low gl fruits to your diet. It’s effective, it’s healthy and it makes you think more about what you eat.
Raspberry ketones raise levels of ketones in the body and are therefore encouraging fat burn without the Atkin’s diet stages, although for greater effect combining the two might work a treat. I’m a firm believer for the most part in the food beliefs of the Weston A. Price Foundation, which has elements of Atkins and Paleo diet to it, and after several months on Atkins with amazing effect, my body is continuing to lose weight albeit slowly. So I’m eating lots of good fat, healthy veg and fruit, and the occasional treat here and there.
Anyone who’s been on Atkins or around an Atkinite will surely have experienced the kiss of ketosis. For those of you who have not had the (dis)pleasure, ketosis gives people a rather strong smell of cabbage that is emitted from their mouth and in some cases their body odour as well. It’s one of the telltale signs that I use as a marker when I’m attempting to reenter ketosis. It’s also the way I knew these pills had tipped my body back into ketosis after just one dose. This may not be the same for everyone, but because my diet lends itself rather nicely to ketosis it happened for me.
And so, my weight continues to drop off steadily. I’m about to embark on a spurt of yoga for #FitnessFriday. You can read about my trampolining for #FitnessFriday here and watch out for my personal training experience at Easygym coming next Friday, with none other than the Dreamidols!
Shape Up (From Inside) Supplement 2 – Terranova Green Purity
Now, I said that this feature was about shaping up your body on both the inside as well as the outside. Terranova Green Purity is no quick fix. Rather it aids your body in ongoing detoxification, which as we all know is an important part of both feeling and looking good.
Terranova Green Purity is not only deeply nourishing, it also supports detoxification throughout the body – liver, kidneys, intestines, lymphatic system, blood, skin and even on a cellular level. It can be incorporated into your daily diet as part of an ongoing detox, or you can use it during an actual detox regime to help prevent nutrient loss sometimes associated with detoxing. It contains a bounty of ingredients that we traditionally associated with detox, only rather than having to eat or drink gallons of the stuff just two half teaspoons a day of this superblend in water is all that’s needed –
Dandelion Leaf – one of nature’s most nourishing plants, dandelion provides an array of vitamins and minerals, as well as carotenoids and many other health-giving phytonutrients. It is also known for its supportive role in detoxification and maintaining a healthy liver, primarily due to a supportive influence on bile flow.
Watercress – potent source of sulphur compounds associated with healthy detoxification processes, such as glucosinolates.
Kale – Kale’s major sulphur-rich antioxidants, such as sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol. Research suggests that these sulphur compounds may encourage the healthy elimination of various toxins that are known to be harmful to the liver.
Parsley Leaf – In addition to its historical use as a tonic for kidneys and the urinary tract in general, parsley also provides an abundance of chlorophyll, which may contribute to a healthy digestive environment.
Beet Juice & Greens – provides various B-vitamins and significant levels of vitamin C, the minerals potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper and the important methyl donor betaine (which plays a role in maintaining healthy liver function). Among other nutrients, beet greens additionally provide high levels of carotenoids, especially lutein and zeaxanthin.
Burdock Root – one of burdock’s major prebiotic compounds, inulin, is associated with maintaining a healthy intestinal environment and supporting healthy immune function. Burdock has also been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for maintaining healthy detoxification and blood purification.
Nettle Leaf – In addition to its traditional use in maintaining urinary tract function and elimination of toxins, nettle is also one of nature’s most concentrated sources of vitamins and minerals.
Turmeric Root – the curcuminoids in turmeric have been researched for their powerful antioxidant properties, which is especially significant considering the destructive effect of free radicals on liver health. More specifically, there is some evidence that turmeric may enhance the activity of two enzymes crucial to liver health, glutathione-S-transferase and UDP glucuronyl transferase.
Artichoke Leaf – in addition to helping maintain healthy bile flow, studies suggest that artichoke leaf protects against free radical damage to the liver and may support proper liver cell regeneration. Artichoke leaf is also associated with healthy fat digestion.
Coriander Leaf – in addition to its abundance of chlorophyll, vitamins and minerals, studies suggest coriander may help support the body’s own natural ability to remove heavy metals.
Wheat Grass Juice – especially rich in chlorophyll, which may help contribute to a healthy intestinal environment. It is also abundant in carotenoids, various vitamins and minerals as well as important protective enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD). Cordyceps has historically been used for its adaptogenic properties and may support endurance, healthy energy metabolism, exercise tolerance and oxygen utilisation.
I’ve used this product both through detox and also to support my body’s detoxification pathways through normal living. Through detoxing it feels like detox without the detox. No headaches, tiredness or achey muscles, I was on the level the whole time. Which is great as this means you can almost carry out your normal schedule without any effect, although I always do take it easier whenever I am on a detox regime.
I am a massive fan of the Terranova range, there’s something really special about these supplements – the concentration and the purity of the ingredients leads to a synergy that you can truly feel. The feedback I’ve heard from members of the public about this brand is incredible!
Shape Up Supplement 3 – African Mango
Now I said this was a tried and tested feature, however, I have to come clean… I’ve not actually got round to testing this one yet! But it’s looking like I will start with this trial in mid-July, once I finish the Raspberry Ketones. Watch out for my update on this product coming mid-end August! I’d not heard all that much about African Mango supplement apart from Dr Oz is big on it, just as he is Raspberry Ketones, so I thought I’d do a bit of research to share with you!
African Mango supplements aid weight loss by speeding up the body’s metabolism. It does this in three ways. Firstly, by ridding the body of nutrient-blocking toxins African Mango enables the required vitamins and minerals to release the energy required for fat burning. Secondly, African Mango is rich in vitamin B which increases carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism! This means the body runs more efficiently, having more energy for activity and exercise, which leads to increased fat burning. Finally, African Mango increases the levels of a hormone called adiponectin. Adiponectin causes cells to be more sensitive to insulin, which in turn leads to increased fat and sugar metabolism.
Apparently, African Mango can help target the stomach area as it reduces the body’s resistance to a hormone called leptin. Leptin controls fat storage around the midriff and if a strong resistance is built up to this hormone it becomes near on impossible to lose weight around the belly. I’m very keen to put this product to the test now! As I have said before I have been losing weight from my arms and legs but not really my waist.
As with all supplements aimed at weight loss, it’s recommended to take African Mango as part of a healthy eating plan and to take regular exercise of some type.
Have you tried any of the above supplements, or any other weight loss supps? I’d love to hear your results and thoughts so why not leave a comment below, a message on Facebook or tweet me @biteablebeauty
