Oils & Serums for Summer Skincare
What’s the difference between oils and serums for summer skincare?
It’s a question that I’m often asked, and it’s quite simple really. Serums are usually water-based concentrated formulas that are easily absorbed by the skin. Oils can be pure single oils or a blended formula of multiple oils. A serum usually has a targeted function and smaller molecules going deeper into the skin whilst an oil acts more like a moisturiser, either hydrating the superficial dermis or sitting on the skin and keeping moisture close to the skin’s surface. Both most definitely have their place in summer skincare!
It’s often debated as to whether or not both an oil and serum are required, and I truly believe it depends on your own skin type and its needs. It’s also important to find a serum and oil that work well together, and that’s where the experimentation begins! If your skin is particularly dry and as you get older, you may find you need a cream on top of the oil, especially during the winter months. But now, I’m going to stick to the subject – oils and serums for summer skincare.
Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil
I’ve heard glowing reports of Pai’s Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil, and it certainly left my skin with a gorgeous glow. Rosehip Bioregenerate contains concentrated fruit hip oil, which has double the regenerative sterols and FIVE times the carotenoids of Rosehip Seed Oil. It’s extracted under premium CO2 Supercritical Extraction which means it is collected without any alteration, addition or spoilage.
The oil contains high levels of Tran-Retinoic Acid, which offers vitamin A without the irritation! Its delivered directly to the epidermis and converts into vitamin A to help boost the skin’s natural healing process. With use, Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil conditions, improves firmness and elasticity, and improves the appearance of damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also suitable for all skin types and a great ingredient for summer skincare.
Like Essential Care’s Superfruit Concentrate, Pai’s Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil leaves a beautiful golden glow to the skin, the colour translates almost directly! I used this oil a couple of times on holiday and it’s definitely a keeper. I will be adding a couple of drops to my moisturiser, or perhaps for facial massage during at-home facials.
Pai Age Confidence Facial Oil Echium & Amaranth
There are 10 bioactive plant extracts in this oil, and the formula is nourishing, super-hydrating, and possess anti-inflammatory properties and help protect from environmental stress. There’s also an important ingredient called Guggul which inhibits the enzyme which breaks down Collagen. helping skin stay plump in appearance and firmer for longer. All great reasons to incorporate this face oil into your nighttime routine on holiday.
Simply Bee Propolis Serum
Simply Bee Propolis Serum helps calm the skin, decongest and strengthen, whilst also helping prevent age spots and premature ageing, making this a great skincare product to pack when going on your summer holidays! Propolis is also a proven anti-cancer agent, and has been found to be beneficial for sunburn.
Odylique by Essential Care Superfruit Concentrate
Like the Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil, Odylique by Essential Care Superfruit Concentrate leaves a golden glow on the skin, and is perfect to hydrate the skin at the end of a long day in the sun, or to prepare and protect the skin in the morning before you head to the beach, pool or sightseeing.
Moana Pure Drop of Youth Night Repair Serum
Last but by no means least, Moana Pure Drop of youth Night Repair Serum. Truth be told, I only used this serum a couple of times on holiday, as I was putting Odylique by Essential Care’s Superfruit Concentrate mostly, and I don’t like to mix it up too much else my skin becomes unhappy, congested and prone to breakouts. I do however look forward to trying this serum out once we’ve finished the other product (which is going down quickly as Mr BB has been enjoying it too!)
Moana is a brand from New Zealand, which is a coincidence as I will be combining with Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream. Both brands use the best organic certification body in the southern hemisphere – AsureQuality Ltd.
Their criteria stipulate –
1. 100% natural ingredients
2. 70 to 95% of these natural ingredients must be certified organic
3. Strict international criteria govern all of the remaining ingredients.
The range is the first to utilise Marine Glycans from red seaweed, which apparently help replace glycan stores in your own skin, helping balance pH levels, replenish Collagen, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Moana Pure Drop of Youth Night Repair Serum helps restore vitality to the skin as well as remove toxins whilst you sleep. It’s supposed to be great at reducing puffiness around the eyes – sounds like a dream serum if you ask me, looking forward to trying this one out some more!
As well as Red Seaweed, there are several ingredients in this serum I recognised from the Antipodes brand including –
Mamaku Fern – promotes cell regeneration and has protecting and firming properties
Kowhai Extract – a powerful antimicrobial extract
Kiwifruit Extract – high concentrations of Omega-3, 60% ALA, vitamin C and E, helps retain moisture in the skin
Kawakawa Oil – offers deep moisturising and protecting properties, and is considered a cure-all for skin ailments by the Maori.
