Today I am going to tell you about one of my favourite hair care products are the moment- Hairy Jayne!

That sentiment is true, and I think part of the reason I love these products so much is that a lot of love goes into the making of these products. For they are not made in a factory production line. Oh no. They are handmade in small batches by a lady called, as you might expect from the name, Jayne (which is also coincidentally my middle name!) Jayne was once upon a time a graphic designer, but gave it all up in 2001 to become a hairdresser. She trained at Trevor Sorbie then moved on to award-winning Brooks & Brooks before setting up on her own with Hairy Jayne in 2008.

Having read her biog I think I may have to pay her a visit for a haircut as she says she “loves classic haircuts and tend to be influenced by styles that stand the test of time.” Sounds right up my street! Jayne works out of her studio in Brixton, where she both cuts hair and makes her products, which are what I am going to write about today!

All Hairy Jayne products are made without SLS and Parabens, and are gentle formulas designed to not irritate the scalp. Let’s start at the beginning, with the Hairy Jayne Nourishing Shampoo with Moisturising Honey. Reading through the ingredients list, there are a few that may look a little scary but having checked on the EWG website they are all safe. Sodium cocoyl isethionate and disodium cocoamphodiacetate are coconut derivatives and act as cleansers and foaming agents, whilst hydroxypropyltrimonium is a derivative of guar gum which acts as a thickening agent. The formula itself is thinner than other shampoos on the market, however, it is surprisingly foamy even upon first application and only a small amount is required for the washing. Sometimes I repeat the shampooing stage and on the second time, as usual with shampoo, there is even more of a lather! This particular formula is great for dry hair thanks to the inclusion of Honey, and it also calms frizz and makes hair more manageable – perfect for my sometimes wild and unruly hair!

I love the fragrance of both the Floral shampoo and conditioner from, naturally fragranced with Geranium, Bergamot and Vanilla –  a gorgeous blend and what’s more, the fragrance stays on your hair post-washing.

Next, onto the conditioner. A couple of ingredients I want to point out are cyclomethicone and behentrimonium methosulfate. Cyclomethicone is a silicone with a cyclical structure. It’s a carrier for essential oils and it is too big to penetrate the skin. They evaporate quickly after use of the products, and also help oils penetrate the hair shaft in products such as this conditioner. Whether cyclomethicone and other silicones are toxic to the environment however is another question. In “The Dirty Dozen – Cosmetic Chemicals to Avoid” they are described as “toxic, persistent and have the potential to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms”, and certain silicones as reproductive toxins and endocrine disruptors. However, Dan Thompson, a very well-balanced chap in the industry when it comes to chemicals in cosmetics, has put this write up together about the issue. Behentrimonium methosulfate is an ammonium salt which acts as a conditioning agent, anti-static and a surfactant. The EWG have given it a green card in their assessment and a respectably low score of 1 out of 10 for the hazard indicator, which is good enough for me.

Like the shampoo, the conditioner is thinner than standard products but also like the shampoo only a small amount is required. The instructions recommend applying solely from mid to ends of hair, so naturally, I complied. My results with Hairy Jayne Shampoo and Conditioner echo the end objective of Jayne’s hairstyles, where she believes shape and manageability are the most important factors. The products leave my hair in good shape and easy to manage, without the need for much fuss over styling (I am largely a wash and go girl down to time limitations!)

Finally the Hair Perfume with Heat Protection in Musk Fragrance. I didn’t realise quite how obsessed I was with this product until I looked at the bottle and found it was half empty after just two weeks’ use! I love the way the Musk layers over the Floral fragrance from the Haircare and the scent is really long lasting. Using all the products together before blowdrying my hair resulted in super smooth and flowing locks, I was dead impressed!
