I’ve been meaning to try Simply Bee for a while now, after they very kindly sent me their skincare range and the Cold Chest formula, which we put to good use on our Northern Lights cruise! Read more about that here. The fact of the matter is I’ve had a massive backlog of posts to write up, which I am only just starting to clear now. I banned myself from cracking open any new beauty potions till I’d gotten through a certain number of posts! Thankfully I am now
Not heard about Simply Bee Natural Products?
Well let me tell you a bit more. The formulas use ingredients from the hive, propolis, beeswax and honey, hence the name Simply Bee. Propolis is bees’ own antiseptic and preservative, bees envelope damaged or infected parts of their hive with propolis to keep the rest of the colony safe from infection and help heal it. It’s also a fabulous source of antioxidants, including flavonoids, and has been used as a beauty treatment for thousands of years to purify, heal and smooth the skin. It’s also great at treating skin ailments such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and age spots.
Simply Bee is a family business, from a family who has been beekeeping for over 40 years in the small town of Hopefield, just outside Cape Town in South Africa. All ingredients are responsibly sourced, and they support other local businesses by buying their ingredients. My next purchase from Simply Bee is going to be the insect Repellent, particularly when after our first softball training i woke up this morning with enormous welts on my legs! The inflammation was about 3 inches in diameter on the worst ones!
Now, onto the skincare products Simply Bee sent to me.
Let’s start at the beginning with the Simply Bee Cleansing Cream, suitable for all skin types.
This is a mild but effective formulation, with Sweet Almond Oil (to soften and smooth), Castor Seed Oil (to hydrate), Rose Water (to balance, amongst other things!) Beeswax and Propolis (antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, healing and more!), and Lavender Oil (antibacterial, calming and balancing). I’ve been using a lot of rose-scented products on my face recently, so it is quite refreshing to use Lavender for a change. You can tell it’s a high quality essential oil by the fragrance, no synthetic smells here! I used this with my Konjac Sponge, and my skin was left feeling clean, soft and smooth on the surface.
Next up, the Simply Bee Propolis Serum.
This serum contains just three ingredients, nice and simple. These are Sweet Almond Oil, Propolis and Neroli Oil. Sweet Almond Oil is a great base oil that helps soften and smooth the skin’s surface whilst conditioning the skin, Propolis is a wonder ingredient for our bodies both inside and out. Neroli Oil gives a beautiful scent to the serum, it is one of my favourites! Now, the instructions said to apply a few pumps, so I dispensed three into my palm and applied to my face and neck. One thing I would say is that the serum takes a while to sink into my skin but once it does my skin is left feeling super soft and smooth.
For moisturisers, there are three options – the Simply Bee Daily Moisturiser, Anti-Ageing Cream and Night Cream.
All contain Water, Beeswax, Sweet Almond Oil, Propolis, but the order in which they appear varies and there are some additional ingredients in each of them. The Simply Bee Daily Moisturiser contains Vitis Vinifera, otherwise known as Grape, Seed Oil. This is packed full of antioxidants and is in itself a powerful anti-ager. There’s also Lavender Oil. The Anti-Ageing Cream contains honey, an excellent healer and neutraliser of free radicals, antibacterial as well as softening and smoothing. It also contains Neroli Oil which is great for mature skin types as it helps to smooth our wrinkles and tone the skin. Finally the Night cream contains Shea Butter, a rich and nourishing butter that takes a while to sink into the skin, hence it being more suitable for a night formulation than a day cream. There’s also Geranium Essential Oil which has a relaxing effect on the mind, balances sebum and helps clear dull, sluggish skin for a brighter complexion. Finally, there is Evening Primrose Oil, which is rich in essential fatty acids (particularly GLA), has anti-inflammatory properties, and helps improve circulation and elasticity of the skin.
Out of the two day creams, despite the Daily Moisturiser being suitable for all skin types and the Anti-Ageing Cream being meant for mature skin types, I found the latter best for my skin. I do tend to have dry cheeks so I think I need the extra moisturisation of the richer cream. Something I like about all the creams is their creaminess! They have a rich quality to them without being heavy and without sitting heavily on the skin. However what gives them this quality is the Vegetable Emulsifying Wax NF, which unfortunately is made up of some less desirable ingredients. The most worrying of these s PEG-150 Stearate, a polymer processed with a known human carcinogen, ethylene oxide. Traces of this can be left in the final product, along with 1,4-dioxane, another known carcinogen. There’s also Polysorbate 60, which is made from Corn Oil, Palm Oil and Petroleum. I was really disappointed when I read up on this ingredient, as in the ingredients list Vegetable Emulsifying Wax NF looks very unassuming. I wonder if they have thought about using beeswax as an emulsifier, as they must have plenty of it in their hives!
Simply Bee Update 12th May 2014
I was absolutely delighted when Nicola from Natural Trade Ltd, the UK Distributor of Simply Bee products got in touch to tell me they had been working long and hard to find a suitable emulsifier to replace the Vegetable Emulsifying Wax they were currently using –
” I thought you would like to know that we too have recognised the issues with emulsifying wax and have been working hard towards replacing the emulsifying wax NF we use (which contains Ceteryl Alcohol and Polysorbate 60 – no PEG).
So on that note I will reevaluate my conclusion! I will be using the Cold Chest again next winter, I will continue to use the Propolis Serum as a nighttime treatment, I will also give their insect repellent a go too, as it’s all-natural, and I can’t wait to try the new products which make use of Emulsifier O. Hats off to the team at Simply Bee – great to see you are doing the right thing because I really value your company ethos and loved trying your products!
