Emergen-C (Trailwalker Item 6)
My final Trailwalker essential is also very fitting for this time of year. We’ve all noticed the temperature dropping this week in London as well as the sniffles and coughs in the office/tube/pub from others around us and perhaps in ourselves. It’s this time of year when our immune system needs all the help it can get. This is where Emergen-C can help stave off winter colds and keep our body’s resistance strong to other infections.
Emergen-C comes in handy sachets, simply add to cold water to create an effervescent drink. I packed the Electro Mix for Trailwalker to ensure my body had all the electrolytes and other required chemicals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese and chromium. These all have a role to play in bodily functions which were particularly important during the walk. Potassium and calcium are essential for healthy, strong muscle contractions whilst magnesium protects against muscle cramps. As well as converting fatty acids and proteins into energy in cells, manganese prevents free radical buildup during intense exercise and plays a key role in regulating blood sugar, as does chromium.
All varieties of Emergen-C contain 1000mg of vitamin C (the RDA is <100mg) along with the correct level of B-vitamins to ensure the body actually absorbs the vitamin C. Add to this the fact there is no artificial sweetners, such as Asapartame (which has been linked to a number of illnesses) and there are no sources of phenylalanine, a known neurotoxin.
Now you may think the sachets are expensive, however as I just found out at emergen-c.co.uk – You get a lot of vitamins in a box of Emergen-C. If you work it out based on vitamin C per £ cost, EmergenC is actually 30% cheaper than Berocca. The cost of a box may be 3 times the price, but you get 4 times the vitamin C!
From £12.99 for a box of 30 at emergen-c.co.uk Also available at health stores nationwide.
