How to Treat Acne with Natural Treatments and Remedies

We all want healthy clear, glowing skin – but what if what you have instead is acne prone skin that you just cant seem to get rid of?

There are many products claiming to work miracles for acne promising to vanish those pimples for good. Trouble is, with so many to choose from, it’s confusing to know which products you should be using on your skin to help clear your acne.

N.B. If you have severe acne you should check with your doctor. A dermatologist should treat it with ingredients such as Benozyl peroxide, which will reduce redness and the risk of permanent scaring.

What are the commonly causes for acne breakouts?

Acne is a skin disease, which involves the oil glands at the base of the hair follicles. Nobody is completely sure what causes acne but experts believe the primary cause is a rise in androgen levels, which is a type of hormone.

The acne process-

  • Our skin has pores (tiny holes), which connect to oil glands located underneath the skin.

  • The glands are connected to the pores via follicles (small canals).

  • These glands produce Sebum, which is an oily liquid.

  • The sebum then carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin.

  • A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin.

  • If the follicles get blocked, small pimples will appear due to an accumulation of oil underneath the skin.

How do I know what is best for my skin when treating acne?

Now that you know what primarily causes acne breakouts, let’s take a look at some natural ingredients you could be using.

There are many natural ingredients to aid the severity of your acne, some of these ingredients can even be found in your kitchen cupboard! Though we aren’t promising miracles with these ingredients, here at Lypsso we believe the ‘less is more’ approach. The least ingredients your acne13 product has in it, the less chance your skin has of reacting to it. Take a look below at some ingredients to try out to treat your acne14.

Baking soda to reduce acne15 inflammation

Baking soda not only helps eliminate breakouts and reduces inflammation, it is also an exfoliator and helps remove dead skin cells! Because of this, it also works great to reduce any old scars or acne16 marks. To use it, just take a few teaspoons of baking soda and mix it with warm water until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to your skin. You may want to leave it on for only 10 to 15 minutes the first few times as it may feel powerful. You can gradually increase the time up to an hour or even leave it on overnight. After one use you can see a great difference in your skin!

Coconut Oil to moisturize acne17 prone skin

Coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal. Coconut oil is also extremely moisturising and gentle. It helps fight the bacteria and reduce redness. Apply the coconut oil to your skin and massage it in. You can reapply a couple times per day. With coconut oil, there is no need to ever use a moisturiser again, it works so well and doesn’t clog your pores. For optimal benefit, use an organic coconut oil that is unrefined.

Tea Tree Oil as acne18 antibacterial

Tea tree oil is an essential oil and can be a very powerful all natural remedy for acne19, as it is antibacterial. To apply it, mix a small amount of tea tree oil with an equal amount of water. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply it to your skin. You can reapply throughout the day or leave it on under your makeup.

Lemon Juice to clear acne20 skin

Either use lemon juice or a freshly squeezed lemon. Lemons have natural antibacterial and astringent properties to help clear your skin. Apply the lemon juice to your skin and leave on for 15 minutes to an hour.

Aloe Vera to reduce acne21 redness

Aloe Vera is very soothing and reduces inflammation and redness. To use it, apply the gel to your skin with your fingers, you can apply it several times a day. If you have an aloe plant, it would be even better as you get the aloe fresh, without any added ingredients.

There’s no time like the present to try these natural remedies for acne22 and try to improve your skin to the best it can be. The good news is there’s a lot to try! Be sure to let us know how you get on by tweeting us @Lypsso
